Make Your Own Cloth Diaper Wipes

When the birth of my third child was looming I made several cribs sheets especially for her and a few friends who were also expecting, and I was left with tons of 8 inch x 8 inch squares of perfectly good fabric.  I couldn't think what I could make with them, but I also couldn't bear to throw away such good fabric.

What to do?  What to do?

This is a question I ask myself a lot, and usually, I have too many ideas - more often than not my ideas require me to buy something new.

Well, not this time.  My good friend Margaret gave me several yards of yellow terry cloth a while ago, and BAM!  Some pretty good looking DIY cloth diaper wipes.

On the left is a sample of my 8x8 inch squares, on the left are 2 of my store bought cloth wipes, and behind it is the ever so lovely free terry cloth.  8x8 inches sure looks like a good size to me.

Now, this project was very elementary.  I cut 8x8 inch terry squares.

Place wrong sides together (if terry cloth has a wrong side).  Pin and sew the 2 pieces together, leaving an approximate 2 inch opening to turn the wipe right-side-to.

Cut the corners to get a better point.

Turn the cloth wipe right-side-to, and press.

Finally, topstitch all the way around, and love your new cloth wipe!

These guys also make great custom washcloths for your kids' bath, but I don't know how you can turn down wiping your kids tush with aliens or Star Trek.

  1. Brilliant! I didn't turn crunchy until our son was out of diapers, but this is a great gift idea. I use the same process to make napkins for his lunch box. His school is very earth-friendly, so everything is his lunch (there is no cafeteria) must be eaten, composted, or recycled. I'm not saying you'd want to reuse your wipes for sandwich napkins, but you can keep using this idea for napkins as your kids get older!

    1. Thanks, Jen. You are right about using them for napkins, or wash clothes, or I am sure I could figure out something I could wipe up with them... :)
